UnitedHealth's ACO plans to double enrollment: 3 things to know

Morgan Haefner -

UnitedHealth Group said it is on its way to doubling membership in its national ACO, according to a Forbes report.

Here are three things to know:

1. UnitedHealth launched its NexusACO in 2017. NexusACO, which is for self-funded employers with 100-plus employees, has agreements with 33 ACOs across 15 states.

2. Dan Schumacher, COO of UnitedHealth Group's insurance arm UnitedHealthcare, spoke to analysts during the company's second quarter earnings call July 18 about NexusACO: "Today we've got about 75,000 enrollees on that. We'll double that as we turn into the year and we look to double that again by the time we get to the end of 2019," according to Forbes.

3. UnitedHealth is not the only insurer ramping up its ACO presence. Aetna, with about 53 percent of its medical spend tied to value-based contracts, has 289 ACO agreements.
