23 healthcare organizations, purchasers endorse standard ACO measures in California

Morgan Haefner -

Healthcare companies and purchasers want to standardize ACO performance measurement and benchmarking in California, according to the Integrated Healthcare Association and Pacific Business Group on Health.

The ACO benchmarking and measurement effort will launch in 2018 and comprise 18 clinical quality, hospital use and cost measures for treatment provided in 2017. The measures will range from total cost per enrollee to cancer screenings to emergency department visits. Eventually, the initiative seeks to have 35 standard performance measures.

"Consistent commercial ACO performance measures and statewide and national benchmarks can help health plans, physician organizations, and purchasers target performance improvement activities that advance the goal of high-quality, affordable, patient-centered care," according to IHA and PBGH, the two organizations partnering on the effort. "To that end, IHA and the National Quality Forum are working together to develop a benchmarking framework for California ACOs that could serve as a national model."
