10 states with the highest risk of rural hospital closures

Rural hospitals have been facing immense financial pressures as they deal with rising inflation and the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The 10 states with the highest percentage of rural hospitals at risk of closure, according to a report from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform:

 

  1. Hawaii: 75 percent
  2. Connecticut: 67 percent 
  3. Alabama: 60 percent
  4. Mississippi: 54 percent
  5. Kansas: 53 percent
  6. Texas: 50 percent
  7. Oklahoma: 46 percent
  8. Arkansas: 46 percent
  9. Tennessee: 44 percent
  10. New York: 41 percent
