The orthopedic surgery team at Massachusetts General Hospital provides the full spectrum of musculoskeletal care and treats 80,000 patients annually. The orthopedic service line at Massachusetts General was established in 1899, and it has grown into one of the top 50 programs in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report. Massachusetts General physicians have provided care for professional athletes. For instance, Anne Holland Johnson, MD, served as the team physician for the 2014 U.S. Women's Olympic Hockey team. The hospital includes numerous orthopedic research laboratories, such as the Harvard Orthopedic Trauma Research Division and the Mass General Sports Performance Center, which opened in 2012 and combines advanced biomechanical imaging technology with the clinical expertise of the hospital staff to help athletes prevent and recover from injuries and improve their performance.
