University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (Iowa City). The Neurosurgery Clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics comprises 10 neurosurgeons who focus on brain and spinal cord tumors, movement disorders, trauma and degenerative spine pathology. With a long history of innovation, the University of Iowa's neurosurgery department was the first in Iowa to perform an auditory brain stem implant and remains the only hospital in the country with a high-fidelity driving stimulator for assessing the safety of drivers with issues such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and other orthopedic problems. The Neurosurgical Anesthesia Service at UI Hospitals and Clinics does more than 1,700 neurosurgical anesthetics per year. The UI Spine Center, which comprises three orthopedic surgeons, is a designated Blue Distinction Center+, and U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital among the top 100 hospitals in the nation for neurology and neurosurgery in 2017-18.
