Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). The Rush University Medical Center department of neurological surgery's spine team is led by Vincent Traynelis, MD, a former president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Cervical Spine Research Society, and includes renowned spine surgeon Richard Fessler, MD, who was the first physician in the U.S. to perform human embryonic spinal cord transplantation. Rush's neurological surgery program also supports nine ongoing clinical trials, including a cervical spinal cord injury treatment study examining stem cell treatment for people paralyzed by spinal cord injury; the new therapy has helped 4 of 6 patients treated at Rush regain significant movement in at least one side of their body. Rush also supports a growing minimally invasive lumbar spine surgery service, which jumped 19 percent from 2012 to 2013, and in 2016 spine surgeons at Rush began using patient-specific rods during reconstructive spinal procedures. U.S. News & World Report ranked Rush among the top 20 hospitals in the nation for neurology and neurosurgery in 2017-18, and CareChex ranked the hospital among the top 50 in the nation for neurological surgery in 2018.
