Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital. The Yale Cancer Center was established in 1974, the same year it received its National Institute of Cancer designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of 47 in the country. The center is a collaboration between scientists and physicians at Yale School of Medicine and the academic health system's Smilow Cancer Hospital. The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital has received three-year full accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers of the American College of Surgeons. The cancer hospital also offers a healing garden and survivorship clinic with innovative therapies and resources for cancer survivors. Blue Cross Blue Shield has designated Yale-New Haven Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center for Complex & Rare Cancers; the hospital has also earned Magnet-recognition for nursing excellence.
