Geisinger Medical Center (Danville, Pa.). In the early 1900s at the age of 85, Abigail Geisinger, who was born and raised in Danville, led the creation of a hospital that would ultimately become Geisinger Health System. She recruited Harold L. Foss, MD, a young physician, to serve as the hospital's first surgeon-in-chief. The hospital officially opened in 1915.

Today, 505-bed Geisinger Medical Center serves more than 2 million residents in central and northeast Pennsylvania. Geisinger houses a Level I trauma center, the region's only pediatric trauma center, the Janet Weis Children's Hospital, the Hospital for Advanced Medicine and clinical research facilities. The Geisinger system, led by David Feinberg, MD, is comprised of 30,000 employees, including nearly 1,600 employed physicians, 12 hospital campuses, two research centers and a 510,000-member health plan, cumulatively leveraging an estimated $8.9 million positive impact on the state's economy.

Geisinger Medical Center has achieved Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The hospital was named as high performing in orthopedics and urology by U.S. News & World Report in its 2015-16 rankings, and Healthgrades gave Geisinger Medical Center its America's 50 Best Hospitals for Vascular Surgery Award this year.
