Emory University Hospital | 100 great hospitals in America 2016

Emory University Hospital (Atlanta). Emory University Hospital started out in March 1904 as Wesley Memorial Hospital, a 50-bed facility housed in a Civil War-era mansion in downtown Atlanta. Eighteen years later, the hospital outgrew its facilities and moved to its current location in November 1922, adopting its current name in the mid-1930s. Emory University Hospital has 579 beds, and physicians there treat more than 24,000 inpatients and 80,000 outpatients each year.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Emory University Hospital the No. 1 hospital in both Georgia and the Atlanta metro area in its 2015-16 rankings. Additionally, the hospital was nationally ranked in 12 adult specialties, including ophthalmology and neurology and neurosurgery. The American Nurses Credentialing Center has recognized Emory University Hospital as a Magnet hospital since 2014.

Emory University Hospital is the flagship facility of Emory Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in Georgia. In 2014, Emory University Hospital was the first hospital in the country to treat patients with Ebola virus. In March 2016, the hospital utilized the same unit, Emory's Serious Communicable Disease Unit, to treat a patient who contracted Lassa fever in Togo, a small country in Africa.
