Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMCThis nonprofit children's hospital is now licensed for 315 beds, but it got its start in 1890 as a single cot in a local hospital dedicated to the care of children and infants. In its own facility now on a 10-acre campus, the hospital building has nine floors, 13 operating suites and a 20,000-square-foot family resource and activity center, which houses a chapel, libraries, a healing garden and a business center for parents.

As the only hospital in southwestern Pennsylvania solely dedicated to the care of infants, children and young adults, clinicians at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC performed 35,534 surgical procedures, and its emergency room hosted nearly 80,000 visits in fiscal year 2015.

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC was recognized among the nation's Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in 2015 by Soliant Health. Not only is the hospital visually pleasing, it is also designed to be one of the quietest hospitals in the nation: More than 30 different design measures, including sound-deadened elevator cab enclosures, extensive use of door seals, reduction of overhead paging and "soft" wheels on mobile carts, were incorporated into the facility's design.

The children's hospital is also well-known for quality of care: It was ranked nationally in 10 pediatric specialties by U.S. News & World Report in 2015-16, earning it a spot as the No. 8 children's hospital in the nation. Additionally, the Leapfrog Group named Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC as one of its 2015 Top Children's Hospitals.
