UPMC Presbyterian | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

UPMC Presbyterian (Pittsburgh). With roughly 650 beds and a Level I trauma center, UPMC Presbyterian is the flagship of UPMC's sprawling academic medical campus. The hospital is one staple of Pittsburgh's academic health hub: Since it was founded in 1893, UPMC has evolved from a single psychiatric hospital into a $10 billion integrated global health enterprise with more than 20 academic, community, and specialty hospitals.

U.S. News & World Report ranked UPMC as the No. 1 hospital in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania and a top hospital in the country for several specialties, including gastroenterology (No. 7), ear, nose and throat care (No. 7) and pulmonology (No. 10) for 2014-15. UPMC is closely affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, which has ranked among the top 10 recipients of research funding from the National Institutes of Health since 1998. In fall 2014, UPMC Presbyterian Hospital's infection prevention teams improved hand washing and sanitizing compliance at the hospital to nearly 100 percent among clinical staff through accountability and educational measures. The improvement is part of UPMC's Just Culture initiative, which includes education, videos, internal newsletter articles, posters and verbal reminders to build accountability for patient safety.

This spring, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh, the UPMC system announced the formation of the Pittsburgh Health Data Alliance. Researchers from all three institutions will gather and use big data to transform healthcare. This August, UPMC will open its Lemieux Sports Complex, the official practice and training facility for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The facility will include space for clinical care, a sports medicine clinic with 24 private rooms, physical therapy gym and aquatherapy and two full-size hockey rinks.
