University of North Carolina Hospitals | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

University of North Carolina Hospitals (Chapel Hill, N.C.). With 805 patient beds, the public UNC Hospitals is the anchor of UNC Health Care and dates back to 1952, when its N.C. Memorial Hospital opened its doors to patients. The parent organization, UNC Hospitals, was created in 1989 and today includes hospitals devoted to children, women, neurosciences and cancer care. More than 3,500 babies are born here each year.

U.S. News & World Report recognized UNC Hospitals as one of the top 50 facilities in the country for cancer and ear, nose and throat care. Forbes also recognized UNC Health Care as one of America's Best Employers for 2015. The system's relationship with UNC School of Medicine makes it a hub for health research and a top recipient of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health as well.

A number of first-of-their-kind studies are in progress at UNC Hospitals that support population health. One study, led by Samuel McLean, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology and emergency medicine at UNC School of Medicine, will evaluate the health outcomes of sexual assault victims over the long term. Dr. McLean also recently led a study that found individuals living in disadvantaged neighborhoods have worse musculoskeletal pain outcomes over time after stressful events.
