University of Michigan Medical Center | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

University of Michigan Medical Center (Ann Arbor). The University of Michigan board of regents established a three-member medical department in 1848, which is today known as the University of Michigan Medical School. This eventually led the opening of U-M's academic medical center, which is the first university-owned medical facility in the United States. U-M Medical Center is the main complex for patient care within University of Michigan Health System. The center is made up of several hospitals and specialty centers, including the 550-bed University Hospital.

U.S. News & World Report ranked U-M Medical Center as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for several specialties, including cancer care, cardiology, urology and ophthalmology. The system has also earned "A" grades from Leapfrog Group for patient safety for five years straight. This summer, U-M Hospitals and Health Centers was recognized by the Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care for patient engagement after it eliminated restrictive visiting policies. Patients' families and loved ones are now able to visit 24 hours a day.

U-M Medical Center and its parent health system have launched or opened a number of new programs and facilities this past year, including the Massey Emergency Critical Care Center, or Massy EC3. In this center, caregivers stabilize and diagnose critically ill and injured patients before providing advanced emergency care. Last fall, the U-M Board of Regents approved a $9 million project that will renovate an existing area of the hospital to create a 22-bed short-stay unit for adults who need just one or two days in the hospital before returning home or going to another care setting. The board also recently approved a $23 million adult operating room expansion project.
