University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). Established in 1823 as the Baltimore Infirmary, this hospital, located near the Camden Yards and Inner Harbor of Baltimore, is one of the nation's first teaching hospitals. All of its physicians are on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and they treat more than 32,000 inpatients annually.

The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, part of UMMC, is designated as a Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, helping vault UMMC to being ranked No. 46 in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report's 2014-15 rankings. U.S. News & World Report also ranked UMMC as the No. 3 hospital in Maryland.

One of the more unique programs that UMMC offers is the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, the world's first center dedicated to saving lives of people with severe, life-threatening injuries sustained in car crashes, violent crimes and other traumatic incidents. The center is the statewide referral center for head and spinal cord injuries, multi-system trauma and severe orthopedic injuries. It is housed in a new critical care tower, which was dedicated in 2013 and includes 64 private ICU patient rooms, a new helicopter landing pad and 10 new operating rooms.
