Cleveland Clinic. Cleveland Clinic was founded in 1921. The physicians who founded it, drawing from military medicine, "believed in diverse specialists working and thinking as a unit." "This kind of cooperation, efficiency and shared vision has fostered excellence in patient care, research and education," its website states. Those principles are still in place at Cleveland Clinic.

Cleveland Clinic was ranked the No. 4 hospital in the nation, the No. 1 hospital in Ohio and the best hospital in the Cleveland metro area by U.S. News & World Report in its 2014-15 rankings.

Today, with more than 1,400 beds on the Cleveland Clinic main campus and 4,450 beds throughout the system, Cleveland Clinic is one of the largest and well-respected hospitals in the country. A whopping 5.1 million patients visit Cleveland Clinic each year, and more than 3,000 physicians and scientists work there. Its overall mission is "to provide better care of the sick, investigation into their problems, and further education of those who serve." In 2008, Cleveland Clinic became the first healthcare provider in the country to become a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, "a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption."

In their own words:

"At Cleveland Clinic, “Patients First” is the principle that guides everything we do. We are united around a model that stresses collaboration, teamwork, quality, transparency and empathy; every decision is influenced by what is best for the patient. As a group practice model, all 3,000-plus of our physicians are employed by the hospital and paid a straight salary, ensuring that all decisions are based on the patient’s needs, not on finances. Working as a team, our doctors make sure that patients are seen by the experts who are best to handle their issues. In 1921, our founders’ mission was clear: clinical excellence, education and research. Today, we continue to carry out those ideals, with the patients always at the center."
