Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston). In 1896, as part of their missionary charter, Methodist deaconesses founded Deaconess Hospital to care for Boston's residents. In 1916, the Boston Jewish community founded Beth Israel Hospital to care for the city's growing immigrant population. In 1996, the two neighboring hospitals came together to create one of Boston's renowned academic medical centers.

Beth Israel Deaconess, with 649 beds and 1,250 full-time physicians, is a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School and a fully integrated medical center. U.S. News & World Report repeatedly ranks BIDMC nationally in numerous specialties. For 2014-15, the hospital was ranked No. 4 in Massachusetts and No. 3 in Boston.

BIDMC houses a renowned academic research program that is ranked third in the nation for National Institutes of Health funding among independent hospitals. Every day, more than 300 clinical trials are offered throughout the medical center in areas such as cancer, neurology, cardiology and others.

BIDMC is also the official hospital partner of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox. In this partnership, BIDMC provides sports-related injury educations reports that are published on the team's official website. Hospital staff members also run the first aid stations at Fenway Park in Boston. As a symbol of its spirit and commitment to the team, every baby born at BIDMC receives a baby cap and bag with logos of the hospital and team.
