Beaumont Hospital (Royal Oak, Mich.). Beaumont Hospital first opened its doors in January of 1955 with 238 beds. Beaumont Health System — named after William Beaumont, MD, a famous Michigan physician who led groundbreaking work on human digestion and physiology — in 2014 closed a landmark merger with Dearborn, Mich.-based Oakwood Healthcare and Farmington Hills, Mich.-based Botsford Health Care to create a $3.8 billion nonprofit health system.

The newly formed health system, called Beaumont Health, is comprised of eight hospitals with 3,337 beds, 153 outpatient sites, 5,000 physicians and more than 33,000 employees. Beaumont Hospital is the 1,070-bed major academic, research and referral center for the system, and is one of the nation's busiest hospitals. In 2014, it had 57,024 admissions, 120,132 emergency department visits and 1.38 million outpatient visits.

Beaumont Hospital has been recognized by numerous organizations as a top hospital. It is ranked as the best in Detroit and in Michigan, and nationally as a "Best Hospital" with top rankings in 16 specialties by U.S. News & World Report. Beaumont Hospital is a designated Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, and the Beaumont Health system was named to Healthgrades' list of Best Hospitals for 2015.

In 2010, Oakland University and William Beaumont Hospital opened an allopathic medical school called Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Beaumont has approximately 870 residents and fellows and offers 86 residency and fellowship programs."
