University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). The University of Maryland Medical Center is one of the country's oldest academic medical centers, founded in 1823 as the Baltimore Infirmary. Over the years, the 816-bed hospital has become a staple institution for tertiary and quaternary care in the state.

In 2013-14, U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital second in the state and nationally in five specialties: nephrology, urology, cancer, otolaryngology and gynecology. The Leapfrog Group, Practice Greenhealth, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and others have recognized UMMC for patient safety, sustainability and nursing excellence. Last year, the hospital also received the 2013 Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement, which honors hospitals that excel in patient safety and quality improvement in four inpatient clinical areas: acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, Surgical Care Improvement Project measures and pneumonia.

UMMC includes several major centers and service lines. The R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center — the first and only integrated trauma and critical care center in the nation — treats more than 8,000 of the most critically ill and severely injured patients every year, while the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center stands as a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. UMMC physicians, which number almost 2,000, including residents, also performed the most extensive full face transplant in the world in March 2012.
