University Hospitals Case Medical Center (Cleveland). UH Case Medical Center, a 1,032-bed tertiary academic medical center and flagship of the University Hospitals system, was founded in 1866. The hospital formally affiliated with the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1895 after Samuel Mather, a hospital trustee for 47 years, returned from a visit to Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital. He saw the concept of an academic medical center in the flesh and wanted to bring those elements of patient care and clinical research to Cleveland.

UH Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve are among the leading recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health, garnering nearly $400 million in external awards every year toward clinical research.

UH Case Medical Center was the 2012 recipient of the American Hospital Association – McKesson Quest for Quality Prize for its leadership and innovation in quality improvement and safety. UH Case Medical Center's highest-ranked adult specialties included gastroenterology (13), cancer (15), orthopedics (16) and urology (17).
