Sentara Norfolk (Va.) General Hospital. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital's origins date back to 1888, when the 25-bed Retreat for the Sick was founded in downtown Norfolk. Now, the 525-bed hospital is flagship for the 12-hospital Sentara Healthcare system.

Sentara-Norfolk-General-FactsU.S. News & World Report ranked Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as the No. 1 hospital in Virginia in 2013-14 and one of the top 50 hospitals nationwide for cardiology and nephrology. The hospital is Magnet-designated for nursing excellence and home to the only Level I trauma center in the region. In 2013, the hospital earned an "A" safety rating from The Leapfrog Group, and the organization also named Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as one of its top hospitals.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School. In 2013, the hospital and the medical school joined forces to create the Sentara EVMS Comprehensive Pelvic Floor Center, which combines their research, technology and multidisciplinary care teams to provide individualized care for men and women with pelvic organ prolapse or related conditions.
