Providence Portland (Ore.) Medical Center. The history of Providence Portland Medical Center traces back to the Sisters of Providence, who arrived in Washington State in 1856 and began caring for the sick.

Providence-Portland-Medical-Center-factProvidence Portland Medical Center is part of Providence Health & Services, the Renton, Wash.-based nonprofit integrated system that resulted from the Sisters' work. Today it is the largest healthcare provider in Oregon. The system is involved in six of Oregon's 15 coordinated care organizations, a pilot program of accountable care organizations for Medicaid populations. Providence Portland Medical Center includes a medical staff of more than 1,000 and is the birthplace to more than 2,500 babies each year.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Providence Portland Medical Center as the No. 3 hospital in Oregon for 2013-14. Healthgrades recognized the hospital in 2014 with its Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, meaning it performs within the top 5 percent of hospitals across the country for overall clinical excellence. The hospital was also one of 90 hospitals nationwide — and one of two in Oregon — to receive "Top Hospital" honors from The Leapfrog Group for meeting the highest standards in quality of care.
