NYU Langone Medical Center (New York City). Founded in 1841, NYU Langone Medical Center is home to a number of scientific and medical advancements, such as discovering the mosquito transmission of yellow fever, creating the first department of forensic medicine in the country and revealing DNA's role in genetic transformation. NYU-Langone-Medical-Center-factsLocated in the heart of Manhattan, NYU Langone Medical Center has more than 1,000 beds and more than 2,000 attending physicians. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital as the No. 14 hospital in the country in 2013-14, and it secured spots as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for 12 specialties, including top 10 rankings for orthopedics, rheumatology, neurology and neurosurgery, and geriatrics. The medical center is Magnet-designated for nursing excellence, and Healthgrades honored the hospital in 2014 for excellence in stroke care, pulmonary care and cardiac care.

Earlier this year, NYU Langone Medical Center received an initial gift in excess of $50 million from longtime hospital supporters Laura and Isaac Perlmutter. The money will go toward the hospital's cancer research and treatment and led to the hospital's National Cancer Institute-designated center being renamed to the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone.

NYU Langone Medical Center is expected to open an expanded emergency department in 2014, which will more than double the department's original size. It has several other capital investments planned for the next few years, including an energy building with combined heat and power generation, a science building to expand translational research and a new patient pavilion and pediatric center.
