MedStar Washington Hospital Center sits on a 47-acre campus and is staffed by more than 1,400 physicians. More than 400,000 patients seek care at the hospital center each year. U.S. News & World Report ranked it as the No. 1 overall hospital in Washington, D.C., and as one of the top 30 hospitals in the country for cardiology and heart surgery in 2013-14. Nearly 200 MedStar Washington Hospital Center physicians were named to Washingtonian magazine's 2014 list of "Top Doctors."

One of the oldest components of MedStar Washington Hospital Center is its MedSTAR Transport program, the air ambulance service initiated in 1983. Since then, the helicopters have flown on more than 55,000 medical missions. Additionally, the hospital is affiliated with one of the most advanced Level I shock/trauma units in the country and the region's only adult burn center. The hospital is constantly widening its abilities and offerings, as well. For instance, in January, it opened its Center for Excellence in Nursing, a learning lab and of the few hospital-based nursing resource centers in the country.
