Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's legacy began with the opening of its predecessor, the 12-bed Kaspare Cohn Hospital in Angeleno Heights in 1902. Now, the hospital is a world-renowned academic medical center and the largest nonprofit hospital in the western United States.

Cedars-Sinai-Medical-Center-factsHealthgrades selected Cedars-Sinai as one of America's Best Hospitals in 2014, and the hospital ranked as the No. 13 hospital in the country in U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals 2013-14 honor roll and as the No. 4 hospital in the state. Cedars-Sinai also has also received Magnet recognition for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Cedars-Sinai has cemented itself as a stalwart for medical research, ranking among the nation's top 20 non-university hospitals for National Institutes of Health research funding. That funding supports the work of more than 660 Cedars-Sinai faculty and research staff members. Cedars-Sinai has more than 900 research projects underway at its Burns and Allen Research Institute alone. Notable discoveries have occurred at the hospital, including stem cell therapies to repair diseased heart muscle, innovative methods to get brain tumor treatments past the blood-brain barrier and clot-dissolving therapy for heart attacks, among others.

In 2013, the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute's surgeons performed a total of 119 adult heart transplants — the most transplants performed by a U.S. medical center since 2005, when the record was set at 98 heart transplants in one year.
