Valley Medical Center workers to picket

Nurses and other healthcare workers will hold an informational picket outside Renton, Wash.-based Valley Medical Center July 15 over staffing levels, according to a Renton Reporter report.

The workers, who will picket before and after their shifts and during breaks, are represented by the SEIU Healthcare 1199NW union. According to the union, nurses and other healthcare workers currently have to double up on patient loads to cover co-workers for enough time to eat or take needed breaks.

In the report, Karyn Beckley, Valley Medical's senior vice president of human resources and marketing, said the hospital "will be open for business as usual" during the picket, and described talks with the union as collaborative.

The current contract expires June 30.
