Mission Health offers incentives amid nurse shortage: 3 things to know

Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health is trying to remedy a nurse shortage by offering incentives, according to a Asheville Citizen-Times report.

Here are three things to know about the issue.

1. Lori Halula, director of talent acquisition at Mission Health, told the Asheville Citizen-Times the health system is offering eligible nurses signing bonuses of $5,000 to $10,000 and employees who refer nurses who get hired $4,000 bonuses. She told the publication Mission Health is also trying to retain experienced nurses by creating committees to enable employee input and engagement.

2. All of Mission Health's efforts are to try to remedy a nurse shortage. The system has 236 nursing vacancies, officials said, according to the report.

3. Mission Health's situation is representative of a nurse shortage that is going on in many regions of the country, particularly in rural areas. North Carolina alone was short about 12,900 nurses as of December 2014, according to the report, which cites information from HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration.
