Johns Hopkins Hospital workers ratify contract

Service workers at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, members of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, have approved a new contract that was tentatively reached last week, according to a report by The Baltimore Sun.

Roughly 93 percent of the union members voted in favor of the contract, which will give substantial raises to workers who have been with the system for 15 or more years. Additionally, all employees will get at least a 2 percent raise every year through the four-and-a-half year contract.

The contract approval brings the contentious negotiations to a close. During talks, union members held a three-day strike and a rally and even threatened to strike again before Gov. Martin O'Malley intervened.
