Hospitals Slash 5,900 Jobs in May
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Hospital jobs had increased by several thousand each month this year, and in December, more than 10,000 hospital jobs were created. However, there was a spate of hospital layoffs over the past month, with many hospitals justifying the layoffs as needed to remain solvent amid sequestration.
Overall, there were still roughly 48,800 more hospital jobs in May 2013 compared with May 2012, according to the preliminary numbers. The healthcare industry recorded a net gain of 10,700 jobs in May, most of which came in home health services and physicians' offices.
