Healthcare employees report declining confidence, survey shows

U.S. healthcare employees' confidence has fallen to the lowest level in over a year, decreasing from 59.8 in the second quarter of 2014 to 54.3 in the third quarter, according to the Randstad Healthcare Employee Confidence Index, Rand Healthcare's system for measuring and tracking numerous components contributing to employee confidence.

However, the confidence index is still above 50.0, which indicates a positive confidence level on a scale from 0 to 100.

The Harris Poll conducted the study online among 168 healthcare employees, including nurses, physicians, healthcare administrators and other healthcare professionals, between July and September.

Further findings from the study are shown below.

  • The Randstad Personal Confidence Index, a measure of employees' confidence in their own employment situation, fell by 3.5 points from 77.1 to 73.6 in the third quarter of 2014.
  • Seventy-three percent of healthcare employees reported it is not likely they will lose their jobs in the next 12 months, compared to 81 percent in the quarter before.
  • About 36 percent of healthcare employees reported they are likely to look for a new job in the next 12 months, representing an increase of eight percentage points from the second quarter.
  • In the third quarter, healthcare employees expressed waning confidence in their ability to find a job compared to last quarter: About 49 percent say they are confident they could find a job in the next 12 months, compared to 61 percent in the second quarter of 2014.
  • The number of healthcare employees who reported they believe the economy is growing stronger decreased from 31 percent to 19 percent from the second to third quarter.
  • Thirty-four percent of healthcare employees believe the economy is staying the same, and about 46 percent believe it is getting weaker.
