Detroit Medical Center workers protest outsourcing, layoffs

Dozens of Detroit Medical Center employees rallied Monday in protest of the system's plan to outsource housekeeping services, according to a report from The Detroit News.

The outsourcing move will affect 565 employees at seven of DMC's hospitals.

Also on Monday, there was a hearing in Detroit's federal court on the outsourcing decision, and oral arguments will happen Wednesday, according to the report. The lawsuit was brought by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 25 and asks a judge to stop DMC from outsourcing to a new vendor while labor negotiations are happening, according to the report.

A lawyer with DMC told The Detroit News that the current union contract allows for outsourcing.
