Auburn Community Hospital defends viability amid union claims

Auburn (N.Y.) Community Hospital is not in danger of closing, despite a union's claim to the contrary, a hospital official said in a Syracuse news report.

1199SEIU, which represents workers at the hospital, contended that Auburn is one of 28 New York hospitals that could face imminent closure if the state Senate and Assembly don't include $290 million in crucial funding in the budget.

The union said the wave of closures would result in lack of access to critical care, including emergency medical services, for more than 2 million New Yorkers, and also lead to 25,000 jobs being lost.

But in the report, a hospital official disputed the union's claims, saying Auburn is not in danger of closing and has worked with consultants since October 2014 to better its financial performance. The official noted that the hospital has already achieved $5 million in operating performance improvements.
