4 things to know about lesser-known nursing careers

Job opportunities continue to abound for the nursing profession.

Some of these opportunities are in traditional roles, but there are also new options for those looking at a new nursing career, according to a report from TheJobNetwork.

Here are four things to know about new opportunities for nurses, as outlined in the report.

1. Outcomes management. Nurses in outcome management have the opportunity to impact hospitals' policies or regulations. They analyze statistics on patient needs, length of stay, quality surveys and utilization of services and then propose adjustments in policy or regulation, according to the report. The analysis is also used to measure efficiency at hospitals.

2. Holistic nursing. Holistic nursing, which is found at upscale clinics, includes massage, complementary medicine (a combination of conventional and alternative techniques), and mind-body integration, according to the report.

3. Medical Esthetics Nursing. According to the report, an aesthetics nurse works in medical centers that may also offer spa and other holistic therapy services. These nurses could perform laser procedures, chemical peels, Botox, collagen injections and spider vein treatments.

4. Nursing informatics. Opportunities in nursing informatics are for nurses who are computer-savvy. These nurses help guide IT professionals and code developers "to create the tools that help hospitals and [physicians'] offices operate efficiently and effectively," according to the report.
