HIMSS, PCHAlliance call for 'flexibility' in broadband regulations, systems

There must be flexibility throughout systems and regulations governing broadband access, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and the Personal Connected Health Alliance wrote in a June 8 letter to Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.

HIMSS and PCHAlliance wrote the letter in response to the FCC's April 24 public request for comment on how to accelerate the adoption of broadband-enabled healthcare solutions.

The two organizations voiced strong support for efforts that improve short-term access to broadband for treatments that require home-based connectivity and those that allow reseller access to fixed and mobile broadband networks.

"Rural healthcare needs are as varied as the communities are and geographies where facilities are located, and the choice of technology to enhance the access to, and quality of care, must adapt to these local conditions," the letter reads.

HIMSS and PCHAlliance went on to detail three objectives for the FCC.

1. Promote effective policy and regulatory solutions that encourage broadband adoption and promote health IT.

2. Strengthen the nation's telehealth infrastructure through the FCC's Rural Health Care Program and other initiatives.

3. Raise consumer awareness about the value proposition of broadband in the health care sector and its potential for addressing health care disparities.
