Grande Ronde Hospital taps California telemonitoring system for remote care

La Grande, Ore.-based Grande Ronde Hospital partnered with medical telemonitoring company QOLPOM to provide remote patient monitoring for some of the hospital's weakest patients.

QOLPOM — a subsidiary of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Parallax Health Sciences — is a provider of remote patient monitoring technology. According to The Observer, the QOLPOM system records patients' medical data via a Bluetooth-enabled device, which plugs into a home electrical outlet and sends encrypted data to the hospital through a cellular telephone network. Grande Ronde Hospital has used the in-home devices to monitor patients' blood pressure, heart rate and weight, among other measures, all of which are reported to patients' physicians.

The acronym QOLPOM stands for "Quality of Life-Peace of Mind." The technology services patients experiencing transitory or long-term medical conditions.

"Applying technology to assist individuals in their day-to-day functions is not a new concept," QOLPOM President Nathaniel Bradley said in a prepared statement. "The key is to tailor services to meet the unique needs of individual clients and their families, that is, to wade through the confusing maze of services and find or create what works best for each individual and those who are caring for their loved one."
