Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital undergoing critical blood shortage

Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, part of the University of Vermont Health Network, is asking for blood donations amid a serious shortage, according to NBC 5.

The Plattsburgh, N.Y.-based hospital said its blood inventory hit critically low levels as of Tuesday morning.

While blood donations often decrease around the holidays, several staff members said they haven't seen the hospital's inventory get this low in a long time, according to the report. Hospital officials expressed concerns about treating trauma patients at the facility if they need blood transfusions but the stockpile is too low, reports NBC 5.

The hospital is urging people to donate blood at the hospital or one of its mobile sites over the next week.

"We're especially looking for people with blood type O or males with blood type A or AB," said Christina Beck, a spokesperson for the hospital.
