Anthem expands member access to HIV/AIDS medications

Anthem has made it easier for health plan members to receive HIV/AIDS specialty medications, no longer requiring members to obtain the drugs through a mail order program.

Members now have the option to obtain HIV/AIDS medications from in-network retail pharmacies or by mail through their existing specialty pharmacy.

Anthem, based in Indianapolis, expanded access to these drugs as the result of a nationwide settlement with New York law firm Whatley Kallas and Consumer Watchdog, a nonprofit consumer group based in Santa Monica, Calif.

Consumer Watchdog filed a suit against Anthem in January, claiming the company's mandatory mail order program illegally targeted HIV/AIDS patients, threatening their health and privacy, according to a statement on the consumer group's website.

Members affected by this change will receive notice in the mail and are eligible to request reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs associated with the mail order program.
