Former Brownsville General Hospital in Pennsylvania to Reopen in 6 Months

Staff -
The former Brownsville (Pa.) General Hospital will reopen within six months with limited medical services, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.

The new owner, medical equipment manufacturer Best Medical International, plans to open the former acute-care hospital as Best Fayette Medical Center after it went bankrupt in 2006. The facility will initially include imaging and dialysis centers and a blood lab and is expected to be a "fully functional center" with 75 to 150 employees by early 2013, according to the report.

Best Medical International plans to convert the former hospital into a cancer treatment center with an oncology center, radiology department and surgical unit within the next several years. The company also plans to expand the hospital to accommodate a new proton therapy center.

Brownsville General went bankrupt in 2006, reopened under new owners in 2008 but closed again in 2009 due to further financial issues. Best Medical International purchased the property from the former Parkvale Bank in December for $980,000.

Krishnan Suthanthiran, president of Best Medical International, plans to open three additional cancer centers in the United States and seeks to purchase other former hospitals and convert them into specialty hospitals, according to the report.
