UnitedHealth 2Q Net Income Up 7.4% As Enrollment Rises

Second-quarter net earnings at health insurer UnitedHealth Group have increased by nearly 8 percent, from $1.34 billion in 2012 to $1.44 billion this year.

UnitedHealth, the country's largest insurer, reported quarterly revenues of $30.4 billion, a 12 percent year-over-year increase driven in part by steady enrollment growth. The insurer's enrollment grew by 3 million people in the second quarter to 45 million.

UnitedHealthcare, the main subsidiary of UnitedHealth, accounted for most of the second-quarter revenue at $28.3 billion.

For the six months ended June 30, 2013, UnitedHealth reported net earnings of $2.63 billion, compared with $2.73 billion in the first six months of 2012. Total revenues went up by 11 percent, from $54.5 billion in the first six months of 2012 to $60.7 billion this year. However, total operating costs also increased by 12 percent, from $50 billion in 2012 to $56.2 billion in the first six months of this year.
