SSM Health Care: ICD-10 Could Require 110,000 Hours of Education

Carole McEwan, ICD-10 project manager at SSM Health Care based in St. Louis, recently spoke at CHIME11, the Fall CIO Forum, and estimated the health system will need roughly 110,000 hours of ICD-10 education to make the transition, according to a CMIO report.

Ms. McEwan also said that building or buying that education is an important decision for a hospital or health system to make. HHS plans to build its own and create six classes, she said.

"It takes time to start rolling out the effort," she said in the presentation, as cited in the report. "If you wait too long, the ramp up time will be extremely difficult. You need to get lots of people on the same page and that doesn't happen overnight."
