S&P: Economic Hospital Index Hits Historic Low in November

The average per capita costs of hospital services covered by Medicare and commercial insurance increased 3.57 percent in the 12-month period ended November 2012 — a historic low since the S&P Healthcare Economic Indices started tracking the data.

Eight of the nine S&P Healthcare Economic Indices slowed in their annual growth rates in November 2012, including the overall Composite Index, which fell to 5.07 percent from 5.27 percent.

Composite Index: 5.07 percent
Medicare Index: 2.32 percent
Commercial Index: 6.86 percent

Hospital Index: 3.57 percent
Hospital Medicare Index: 2.61 percent
Hospital Commercial Index: 4.26 percent

Professional Services Index: 6.49 percent
Professional Services Medicare Index: 1.61 percent
Professional Services Commercial Index: 9.03 percent
