Cook County President's 2012 Budget Includes $252M Subsidy to Cook County Health in Illinois

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle has presented to the cook county commissioners her 2012 spending budget, which includes a $252 million subsidy to Cook County Health and Hospitals System, according to a Chicago Business report.

The county health system, which is expected to end this fiscal year with a $96 million budget shortfall, asked Ms. Preckwinkle for a $327 million county subsidy as part of its spending plan. The requested amount is up from last year's county subsidy of $273.9 million.

Cook County commissioners will review Ms. Preckwinkle's spending budget before passing the proposal.

Cook County Health CEO Ramanathan Raju said he plans to rework contracts with service vendors and consultants to make up for the lower subsidy amount, according to the report. Other plans to compensate for a lower subsidy include higher parking rates and layoffs.
