CMS Passes 2 Additional Waivers for Arizona Medicaid

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, the state's Medicaid agency, announced (pdf) CMS has approved two waivers to the state's program.

One of the approved changes is the Safety Net Care Pool, which is a funding reserve that can be used by Arizona hospitals to reduce uncompensated healthcare costs. The SNCP is open to all Arizona hospitals receiving Disproportionate Share Hospital payments.

In addition, the SNCP will provide $332 million per year to Phoenix Children's Hospital, University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson and Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix until Jan. 1, 2014, to help offset rising hospital costs for uninsured care and to help cover more Arizona children. Local government funds, and no state funds, will be used as part of the plan.

CMS also approved a measure that will support hospitals that provide healthcare to Native Americans. AHCCCS can make supplemental payments until Jan. 1, 2014, to the Indian Health Services and tribally operated facilities to help cover their uncompensated healthcare costs associated with Medicaid.
