1.2M Texas Children Still Without Health Insurance

Although the number of uninsured children in Texas has decreased steadily since 2006, there are still roughly 1.2 million children without insurance, according to a report from the Center for Public Policy Priorities (pdf).

The report, "State of Texas Children 2012," looked at several data points on how kids are faring in the state, ranging from school enrollment figures to health coverage. Other healthcare findings from the report include:

•    From 1999 to 2010, the number of uninsured Texas children has gone from 23 percent to 16.9 percent.

•    Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program have helped fill the uninsured gap as privately insured children in Texas have decreased 14 percent from 1999 to 2010.

•    Over that same period, the number of uninsured kids in middle-income families went up 9 percent.

•    In 2011, there were a total of 2.46 million children in Texas enrolled in Medicaid and 523,000 enrolled in CHIP.
