Study: shared medical appointments result in more satisfied patients

Shared medical appointment patients appear more satisfied with their care than those receiving usual care, according to a study published in the Annals of Family Medicine.

The cross-sectional study was conducted using a mailed questionnaire that measured levels of patient satisfaction and other indicators of patient-centered care. The questionnaires were sent to 921 shared medical appointment and 921 usual care patients between 2008 and 2010. A total of 40 percent of SMA patients and 31 percent of usual care patients responded.

The study found that SMA patients were more likely to rate their overall satisfaction with care as "very good" when compared with usual care counterparts. SMA patients also rated their care as more accessible and more sensitive to their needs.
