Most of the neonatal intensive care units have instituted central line–associated bloodstream infection prevention policies and monitor compliance, and reporting more than 95 percent compliance with select CLABSI prevention practices was associated with lower CLABSI rates, according to a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control.
Researchers sent an online survey to hospitals participating in National Healthcare Safety Network CLABSI surveillance, which assessed infection prevention practices. Participating hospitals permitted access to their NICU CLABSI rates. Overall, 190 NICUs participated.
The study found that 84 percent to 93 percent of participating NICUs had written policies and 50 percent to 63 percent reported more than 95 percent compliance for any of the practices.
Reporting of more than 95 percent compliance with insertion checklist and assessment of daily line necessity were significantly associated with lower CLABSI rates.
