SHEA issues support for CDC antibiotic stewardship plan for long-term care settings

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America has published a statement of its support for the CDC's recently released guide for sustainable and effective antibiotic stewardship plans in long-term care settings.

The guide, titled "Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship for Nursing Homes," includes practical ways for nursing homes to establish or expand their antibiotic stewardship activities.

Like the CDC, SHEA strongly supports efforts geared toward improving antibiotic-prescribing practices through the creation of antibiotic stewardship programs.

"This [CDC] report supports the healthcare community working together to track the spread of drug-resistant infections and make aggressive strides toward fostering appropriate antibiotic use in their own communities by providing a practical step forward in unifying the core elements of stewardship programs," said SHEA President Anthony Harris, MD.
