Report: Nurse Communication May Affect 15% of VBP Payments

Improving nurse communication can potentially affect 15 percent of hospitals' value-based purchasing incentive payments, according to a Press Ganey report.

The report, "The Rising Tide Measure: Communication With Nurses," examines how the "Communications with Nurses" dimension of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems survey can affect hospitals' overall VBP payments and performance on other CMS payment programs. The report is based on a Press Ganey analysis of data on 3,000 U.S. acute-care hospitals.

Under the VBP program, 30 percent of hospitals' incentive payments will depend on the Patient Experience of Care domain, which includes the following eight HCAHPS dimensions:

•    Communication with physicians
•    Communication with nurses
•    Responsiveness of hospital staff
•    Pain management
•    Communication about medication
•    Cleanliness/quietness of hospital environment
•    Discharge information
•    Overall rating

One of these eight dimensions — communication with nurses — can account for up to 15 percent of VBP payments, according to the report.

An analysis of HCAHPS scores showed that hospitals that perform well on the nurse communication dimension also tend to perform well on responsiveness of hospital staff, pain management, communication about medication and overall rating, according to the report. Improving nurse communication can thus have far-reaching effects for hospitals' VBP payments as well as their ability to offer patient-centered care, according to the report.
