Report: Hospitals in CMS Program Cut Readmissions 14%, Save $100M

Hospitals participating in CMS' Hospital Engagement Network reduced readmissions by 14 percent in one year, generating $100 million in savings, according to an American Hospital Association report.

The Health Research and Educational Trust, an AHA affiliate, works with CMS to support HEN, which provides education and training to more than 1,600 hospitals recruited by 31 state hospital association partners.

HEN hospitals reduced non-medically necessary early elective deliveries by 42 percent from December 2011 to December 2012, saving $10 million. Combined with savings from reduced readmissions, HEN hospitals saved a total of $110 million, which goes back to the government and private payors, according to the report.

"Hospitals that are part of the HEN program are seeing significant improvements in other quality areas, such as infection control, falls, ventilator-associated pneumonia and central line-associated blood stream infections," the report noted.
