Michigan healthcare officials decide to limit public information on hospital infections

A meeting between Michigan state health officials and health industry representatives ended in the decision to not increase hospital infection transparency in the state, according to a recent MLive report.

After MLive investigated and reported on Michigan's lack of public disclosure regarding hospital infections data in June, nearly 20 officials and representatives met to discuss the policies. Among them were officials from the Michigan Department of Community Health and the Michigan Health & Hospital Association.

Issues such as public reporting and patient outcomes were discussed but, ultimately, the decision was made not to push for increased transparency in hospital infections.

While 31 states mandate hospital reports on healthcare-associated infections, Michigan is not among them, according to the report. Still, roughly half of the state's hospitals voluntarily supply information to the state but many only do so on the condition of anonymity.
