Psychiatrist Lee Silverman, MD, killed a patient who opened fire on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Fitzgerald Wellness Center in Darby, Pa., part of Conshohocken, Pa.-based Mercy Health System, according to a CNN report.
According to Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan the patient, Richard Plotts, an outpatient psychiatric patient shot and killed a caseworker, before Dr. Silverman, who was carrying a weapon, shot him. The alleged shooter is in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Silverman was grazed by a bullet, but was not injured otherwise.
Dr. Silverman is a board-certified psychiatrist and provides care at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa.
